Simple Japanese Sushi Recipe
Ingredients:
For Sushi Rice:
- 2 cups Japanese short-grain rice
- 2 cups water
- 1/4 cup rice vinegar
- 2 tablespoons sugar
- 1/2 teaspoon salt
For Sushi Rolls:
- Nori (seaweed sheets)
- Fillings (choose a combination):
- Fresh raw fish (like salmon or tuna)
- Cooked shrimp or crab sticks
- Sliced avocado
- Cucumber strips
- Cream cheese
- Pickled radish or carrots
- Soy sauce (for dipping)
- Wasabi (optional)
- Pickled ginger (optional)
Tools:
- Bamboo sushi mat (makisu)
- Sharp knife
Instructions:
1. Prepare the Rice:
- Wash the rice thoroughly under cold water until the water runs clear.
- Add rice and water to a rice cooker or pot and cook according to the instructions.
- Once cooked, transfer rice to a large bowl.
- Mix rice vinegar, sugar, and salt in a small saucepan over low heat until dissolved. Let it cool slightly.
- Pour the vinegar mixture over the rice and gently mix with a cutting and folding motion to avoid mashing the rice. Allow it to cool to room temperature.
2. Prepare the Fillings:
- Cut fish, avocado, cucumber, or other fillings into thin, lengthwise strips.
3. Assemble the Sushi:
- Lay a sheet of nori shiny side down on the bamboo mat.
- Spread a thin, even layer of sushi rice over the nori, leaving about 1 inch at the top edge free for sealing.
- Place fillings horizontally across the center of the rice.
- Lift the bamboo mat edge closest to you and begin rolling it tightly over the fillings. Use gentle pressure to form a firm roll.
- Seal the edge by moistening the exposed nori with water.
4. Slice the Sushi:
- Use a sharp knife to slice the roll into 6-8 even pieces. Wipe the knife with a damp cloth between cuts to prevent sticking.
5. Serve:
- Arrange sushi on a plate and serve with soy sauce, wasabi, and pickled ginger on the side.
Enjoy your homemade Japanese sushi! 🍣
